Iosil Energy Corporation has developed technology to purify silicon into high purity virgin polysilicon feedstock for the solar industry. Polysilicon is the beginning raw material used in the manufacturing process for solar cells.
Our process uses standard metallurgical grade (MGS) feedstock to produce polysilicon in a more cost effective manner than other producers. While traditional polysilicon producers use the MGS feedstock along with chlorine in their processes, Iosil has developed a technology that reacts the MGS with iodine instead of chlorine. The advantage of this technology is that it uses less energy and less equipment in the process. Consequently, Iosil’s polysilicon process is significantly more cost effective than the incumbent technologies.
Our technology also has the advantage of reducing silicon waste in the solar manufacturing chain. In the typical solar manufacturing process, silicon ingots are sawn into wafers. The material that is lost in the sawing process is called Kerf loss. Kerf loss represents a 30% to 40% loss of silicon within the solar wafer production chain. Our technology is unique because it recycles this traditional waste product into the high purity virgin polysilicon feedstock for the manufacture of solar cells.
